After power returns, start with lights, phone charging and other small essential loads. Check that supply remains stable. Refrigerators and freezers can resume normal operation.

Delay non-essential high-power appliances such as water heaters, washing machines, dryers, ovens, air conditioning and electric heating for about 10 to 20 minutes when practical. This reduces the simultaneous restoration demand on the grid.

Check appliances that were on before the outage so heaters, cooktops or tools do not restart unnoticed. Follow local utility instructions if they differ.

The rule is simple: small essential loads first, large loads later.
