A technical fault in Cyprus has shown how dependent a modern power grid is on reliable communications. On Friday, August 21, 2026, a serious disturbance hit the island's electricity system at about 10:40 a.m. Power was lost in several regions, with some areas affected for roughly an hour.
According to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, telecommunications links between major photovoltaic parks and the Distribution Control Center were temporarily lost. As a result, the solar farms could no longer be properly monitored and controlled. The transmission system operator said the control center received incorrect or unusable production readings.
The photovoltaic facilities were then removed from the automatic supply system, causing about 100 megawatts of generation to disappear from the grid. To stabilize the network, electricity demand had to be shed. Later reports said load shedding was carried out in six stages. Large parts of Limassol, suburbs of Nicosia and other areas were affected.
The disruption immediately affected everyday life. Numerous elevators stopped operating. The fire brigade said it received dozens of calls involving people trapped in elevators in districts across the island. Many were able to leave only after electricity was restored.
One notable detail is that electricity service was fully restored even though the original technical problem had not initially been completely fixed. Grid operators used alternative arrangements to maintain continuous supply and said sufficient generation capacity remained available to meet demand.
The Electricity Authority then announced additional backup telecommunications connections between the photovoltaic parks and the control center. The incident shows that modern grids depend not only on power stations, transmission lines and transformers but also on data links, measurements and control systems. If those communications fail, generation that physically exists can suddenly become difficult to use safely.
For households, the technical cause makes little difference once power is gone. Elevators, air conditioning, water pumps, refrigerators, routers and payment systems can all stop. Basic outage preparation therefore remains useful even in modern European electricity networks.

Cyprus suddenly loses power: Solar farm communication failure shakes the grid
A communications failure between major solar farms and the control center triggered widespread power cuts in Cyprus and removed about 100 MW of generation.
