Ghana goes dark again: transmission fault triggers chain reaction across power grid

A major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line disrupted Ghana’s grid on 20 August and automatically tripped hydro and thermal generation units.

Ghana goes dark again: transmission fault triggers chain reaction across power grid
Ghana experienced another major power disruption early on Thursday morning. At about 4:30 a.m. local time, Ghana Grid Company Limited, GRIDCo, reported a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line. The disturbance affected the national interconnected system and quickly caused power cuts in several parts of the country.

The transmission fault was only the beginning. Grid protection systems automatically tripped generating units at the Akosombo hydroelectric station as well as some thermal power stations. These mechanisms are designed to protect equipment and the wider grid from greater damage. The consequence is that a significant amount of generation can disappear from the system within seconds.

GRIDCo immediately began isolating the affected line and restoring the system in a controlled sequence. Power had already returned to some areas during the morning while work continued elsewhere. Grid restoration has to be gradual because operators must keep voltage and frequency stable. Reconnecting too much generation or demand too quickly can destabilise the system again.

The timing is notable because Ghana suffered a similar major disturbance on 29 July 2026. This makes the latest event the second serious grid incident within only a few weeks and shows how critical individual high-voltage transmission corridors can be to national grid stability.

For households, the consequences are immediate: lighting, refrigeration, water pumps, internet, mobile communications, electronic payments and businesses all depend on stable electricity. The incident also shows the double role of protection systems: they are essential for preventing larger technical damage, but their automatic actions can widen the impact of a local fault. Preparedness should therefore cover not only multi-day blackouts. Even several hours without power can disrupt daily life. Charged power banks, reliable torches, drinking water, a battery radio and a plan for communication and refrigeration provide a useful safety margin.
